Domains

» Who owns the domain name?

You will always be the owner of any domain registered through us, but in some cases Cliche might appear as Billing contact. This will usually be the case if we're acting hostmaster for the domain. (.com, .net etc.)

This simply means that you pay the annual domain fee to us instead of larger companies only dealing with resellers as Cliche.

» What is the difference between a domain registration and a domain transfer?

A domain name registration means that you'er registering a new domain name, that has not been in service yet or have previously expired.

A domain transfer is for existing domain names, that you wish to have web space set up for, with us. We request a transfer with your current service provider. Usually this will pose no problem, but the service provider might decline the request, if you owe them money, so before you order, make sure you have no unpaid bills with them.

» Can I have more than one domain name attached to the same web space?

Yes. It's free when the cost of the registration/transfer is paid. After you´ve sent your order,
send an -mail to info@cliche.co.uk telling which domain you want the new domain to point to.
The new domain will just point to another domain and will not be connected to mailaddresses or FTP-access.

» Which characters can I use in my domain name?

The standard ASCII set available for all domain names are as follows:

abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz (a-z)
0123456789 (0-9)
- (hyphen)

With the new UTF-8 (Unicode; Multi lingual character sets) domain names, there are several new characters available for use with some TLD's. Among these are:

æ ø å ö ä ô ë ê õ ñ

Each TLD supports different sets - if you're in doubt, please write us for more information about a specific TLD.

» Anything I should be aware of with these new Unicode/Multi lingual domain names?

Yes. There are a few thins you should know, before ordering such a domain name.

Mozilla (Firefox 0.8) is known to support these domain names without the need for a 3rd party plug-in. Internet Explorer (all versions) requires a special plug-in in order to process and use these domain names. See www.idnnow.com for more information on this plug-in.

Note: If your target group of visitors is expected to be using Internet Explorer or another browser not capable of using these domain names, without a plug-in, you would do best with a regular domain name for now.

At lower levels of our services, your domain name will be known as it's ASCII name, e.g.: xn--2fe-domain.com. This is the name, the DNS and webservers identifies your domain by.

» How will I know if the domain I want is available?

You can use our domain checker, to test if the desired domain name is available.

We can set up most domains but we do not have a fixed price for those that are not included on our pricelist.

You are welcome to contact us for a price on a specific domain name.

» How long does it take to transfer a domain name to your servers?

When your webhosting plan has been set up, we will start the transfer.

It usaully takes between 1 and 3 work days to transfer a .co.uk domain, a .com .net .org .biz or .info will be a little longer, and it acquires accept from the acting hostmaster.

» Can I change my domain name?

No, it is not possible to change your domain name. You have to delete it and register a new one.

If you delete you domain name and register a new one with us, we will make the changes to your hosting plan, free of charge.

» Does my domain work both as www.domain.co.uk and domain.co.uk?

Yes, this is standard on all our hosting plans free of charge.

The 'www' prefix is commonly confused as being required rather than optional, because many service providers only made the domain reachable with 'www.' in front of it. Some still do this, but as it is, it is actually incorrect to do so.

'www' is actually a sub-domain we set up automatically upon the creation of your web space.

» How do I set up a sub-domain?

Our current hosting plans do not include the possibility of sub domains.

» Can I buy a domain and have you point it to an IP-address of my choice?

Yes, select "Domain only" as your hosting plan. Use the "Comments" field to write which IP-address you want it to point to. DNS service is included in the price.

» Why have I recieved a bill from "Domain Registry of America"?

Don't pay the bill - it is a scam!

"Domain Registry of America" makes use of immoral methods to get you to transfer your domain to their servers, instead of leaving it with us.

This will end your hosting service with us.

"Domain Registry of America" has a more expensive annual maintenance fee and is infamous for this scam. Pay the bills for your domain where you bought it, unless otherwise stated!
